Success Story
Alan and Michele were born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and began dating when they were 16 years old. They attended the same high school, where Alan was class valedictorian, and then they both went off to Ohio State University.
Alan graduated cum laude, with a degree in electrical engineering and pre-medicine, while Michele received her degree in computer engineering.
The next year was a hectic one, with graduation in June, marriage in July, and then in August, a move to Raleigh, NC. Alan then experienced his first engineering job, as well as his first corporate layoff. Michele had taken a position with IBM and was promptly sent to Chicago for ten weeks of training.
At that time, Alan and Michele knew they did not want anyone else controlling their lives, and decided to start their own business. However, in that same year, Alan began medical school at the University of North Carolina to chase his childhood dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. He was also looking for more security and a bigger challenge than his career in engineering. After just a few months, Alan decided his “part-time” business had more to offer, so he dropped out of med school and took another engineering job, to focus on building their business.
A year later, their first child was on the way. Michele says, "As a little girl, my dream was never to be a computer engineer; it was to be a mom." They now had a sense of urgency, and Alan says, "The more she showed, the more I showed (the business plan)."
Michele was able to quit her job before their daughter, Laurin, was born, and two years later a white stretch limousine whisked Alan away from his job, leaving him free to build their business full-time. On their way to achieving success, their second daughter, Kristin, and their son, Aaron, were born, followed by their second son, Joshua.
They're having a wonderful time growing up with their children. "We don't take vacations, because every day is a vacation, living free in a free country," says Alan. Alan and Michele currently live in their 6,000 square-foot dream house on over three acres of land.
They see their business as not only a way to reach their own dreams, but as a way of helping other people reach their dreams, too. They agree, "You'll never work a day in your life if you do something that you love."
